Kjeragbolten

Kjerag is a mountain plateau on the south side of Lysefjorden, in Sandnes municipality in Rogaland. The highest point on the plateau is 1,132 meters above sea level. The well-known Kjeragbolten is located approx. 300 meters from Nesatindane, a peak facing Lysefjorden at 984 m. The stone is 5 m³ large, and is wedged in a gorge in the mountain 959 meters above the Lysefjorden. In the surrounding mountains, at a certain place below the summit, gunshot-like bangs can be heard, while smoke rises from the rock wall - the so-called Kjeragsmellet. According to what older people say, this natural phenomenon manifests itself particularly in easterly winds when the wind has a certain strength. What the phenomenon is caused by is uncertain, but villagers have believed from earlier times that it is water being forced out from the rock face.
